My name is Austin McGrath. I am a resident of Red Deer, and I am 22 years old. The reason I am doing this event is to change someone’s life. On August 18th, 2012, I will be swimming approximately five kilometers across Sylvan Lake. The reason I am doing this is in hopes to raise money for the Heart and Stroke foundation. My medical history plays a big part in my personal reasons for achieving this goal.
There will also be a Silent Auction as well as a 90's alternative rock band concert at Bo's Bar and Grill, Saturday August 11th at 7 pm. All items in the auction have been generously donated by businesses around Red Deer to support this cause. The Charitable Number for this event is 11878 0840 RR0001. On Friday, May 13th 2011, I suffered a cardiac arrest while swimming lanes at the Rec Centre pool, Red Deer Alberta. My “story” is included with this letter. I am seeking a donation of your choice to support the Heart and Stroke foundation in this matter.
Even though this swim is attainable, there are risks that affect myself in ways that could be fatal and therefore medical attention must be present. I will be starting at the pier of Sylvan Lake, swimming horizontally across the lake, and back, which in total will be approximately five kilometers. The personal risks involved mean I will have a boat following in front, as well as a paramedic on location in case any serious injury may occur. Any medical difficulties will take full priority, so the necessary precautions are in place.
As a result of my trauma I was in the hospital for 47 days, in an induced coma for 17 days and was expected to have over a year of recovery. I was admitted into the extreme rehabilitation, and permanent brain damage was almost guaranteed. Without the funds and research that the Heart and Stroke foundation have invested, my recovery would not have been possible. Because of the hard work and care other people have committed to this cause, my life was saved and that is exactly what I want to do for someone else. My goal is that with the money raised, hundreds of lives will be touched, whether it be by saving a mother from a heart attack, a stroke victim with rehabilitation, or fundraising defibrillators for more battery capacity.
