If you're going to do pop-out, avoid the edges, it ruins the entire point.
If you must do text, for now at least, make it... less bold?
Other than that, just read and follow tutorials, learn basic composition/techniques.

Here's a list of some tuts that are on jsp. Don't know how good these are, but you can find tutorials everywhere on the internet.
