Graphically, pop-outs are rarely a good choice - especially if you're new to graphic designing. Very few are able to pull it off with a high quality. I realize that most of the people on the forums like them and that there's a market for them, but if you honestly care about improving then it would be best to avoid them.
My advice? Check out some more tutorials and stick with rectangles. You can achieve much better work and learn things which will be actually applicable to future work.

I'm not really new to graphic design, I've been doing it for about 1-2years. I just have never done pop-outs before because I did not think they were very artistic.

Also, the text was horrible I know but what I did for background is what the guy did in the tutorial, smudge the layer with a brush making a style, adding a random abstract or background and layer masking it.
