So I wanted to make a thread that we could chat about some traditional art and if people have questions about materials/techniques/studies etc.

Also feel free to post some of your art here or some helpful tutorials!

You can also post your work in the GD Sketchbook thread too: http://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=45108511&f=105

All questions are welcomed! All traditional art media welcomed!

Ill start off with a question if anyone wants to comment on it :P

When someone is doing a master study painting, is it " legal " to sell this study?

Poke around how much they think they it's worth (or they paid before), and charge them ten times as much. Later on tell them it's only cause you are painting for fame and once you get famous those will be worth a FORTUNE.

I'll give a horrible advice and recommend you to ask them how much they are worth. Imo if their offer is too low, tell them you used more $ on paint and materials and charge a bit extra for your work. It all depends how happy they will be with your paintings and how much of cheap bastards they are.

i think it would be better if i had a set non negotiable price... :S

the canvas that i used ranges from 5$ - 15 $.... each and acrylic paint = practically nothing and the oil paints im using are pretty cheap....

but iv read around and it says to never start your first paintings out cheap, because that will devalue your work.... and from there on will be cheap and discourage you... but also dont price to high incase nothing sells and really discourages you....

i was thinking along the lines of 35-45 $ a piece.... that way its not too much but im still making enough green to buy more materials

that sounds appropriate. I had a friend in the US who was quite good at painting and did a lot of abstract stuff and sold it, she had a formula for deciding the cost :P its quite a good idea imo

hers was something like constant base price + (hours x hourly charge) and then she added 10-30 percent depending on how much she liked the outcome!
