really liking the colors in this one man
Is it hard to push the paintings further? Or is it the time involved? Do you just layer the paint on for more blending etc? Or can you still work with the colors for the 2-3 days for the detail?
this is grisaille technique. i tone the canvas with burnt umber, then use a rag and rub away the highlights.
i then go in with paint + quickdry and paint in the darks, using straight umber. i try to go for a 3 value painting. using only white + umber.
after that drys 1-2 days or so, i go in with color + linseed oil and minimal amount of quickdry. i then paint the darks and lights after etc etc
this painting has taken me about 3 class days to finish? aprox 6-8 hours or so of time put into it. been working on others simultaneously though.
there is many techniques to learn. grisaille is one for example. or there is alla prima which is pretty much doing the painting in one sitting. instead of toning the whole canvas, you just brush the darks and leave the lights white. ultra contrast. then just dive into color.
there is also wet on wet etc, using oil you simple start with darks and then paint lights over, keep in mind its always easier to paint in darks first then white opaquely spreads over darks. see the lines within the flower? those were full dark brushstrokes, then after laying those down i brushed in the lighter of the flower pedals overlapping it. if that makes sense.
