do some color studies, try to match colors as best as you can with your eye ( not color picking )

as far as coloring a piece


if you start with b/w you can use overlay ( for darker colors ) or Color layer for more saturated and brighter



but the best way to get the colors you want

you need to just create a new layer and opaquely paint right over it. using the b/w as a base for your color values
