nooooo this is great, and no grid! im not saying a grid is always bad
but you learn so much more when you dont use it!
just try to line stuff up with your eye and using good judgement and you will slowly get better at it, for example ( oh in this portrait the side of the nostrils line up with the eye etc etc ) stuff like that will just come naturally
i completely disagree
Using a few times, obviously dont make it a crutch, but do a few paintings that your 100% confident about your placement. Get used to sighting and measuring things, when you stop using the grid, you will be searching for ways to sight something and have to use plumb lines or angles or whatever which is exactly what you should be doing. Dont say "oh i think the nostril lines up with the eye" actually take your pencil, hold it up there, see exactly where it hits, draw that line on your page, and then measure the distance relative to your fixed point. People say this kind of thing is cheating, but in reality its doing it correctly, your forcing your mind to see the relationships and really thing about them, so when you are good enough to draw intuitively, your mind is in essence using these sighting techniques, it just isnt forced to go through the motions.
Im serious, do like 3 portraits wiht the grid in bnw, spend an hour or two each, then try just going crazy wiht plumb lines/angles. You will be impressed with how much more accurate it is.
No offense uncle but i would say if theres one thing that holds your paintings back, its the lack of sighting and construction. I understand that you like the gestural intuitive way and its what you wanna learn, but its counter productive to teach that to somebody at this level, or really to anybody that hasnt practiced sighting and using construction for things.
