pen tool is awesome in freehand/illustrator, but for simplified vector drawing, I use flash. Only need pentool if you are going very detailed. I prefer flash for drawing vectors because I'm used to it. Mainly the shifting between how it snaps. snap to object, snap to grid, change grid size or visibility. I love flash.
