use darker grey for the inside line of the eyelid, then a lighter 2-3 shades to build an eyelid shape around the darker, inner-eyelid, then you can use the same dark grey for the eyelids

here's the scaled up version of the smaller eye i did, so you can see the details a little better.

sorry it's so sloppy, but you get the idea.

is it best to do vectors in b/w then move to color afterwards ?

depends on the style you're using

if you like the animated stuntkid/duck style, then it's not a bad idea

if you're like me, then no, because i use way too many layers and different shades of gray and once i've got my base shapes and vector work done at a big size, i brush over it

what size and res you usually do in PS? so that pixelation isn't visible with a finished product??

do you basically trace over a model of some sort?

what do you mean?

photoshop has shape layers. they're vector shapes. so it doesn't matter what size i work at.

also, tracing models is good practice when you're starting out
