study anatomy, draw with pencil more, so you can shape out the face with just few lines and do paint the rest digitally!

Yes linde i agree, but at start he had problems layering down the landscapes, and, comparing to now, paintings are in no way flat as they were :) LS progress is slowing down, but there can be more reasons to that. In my opinion, he doesn't take as much time for them as he did back than.

Use less to create more, don't just lay down paint over paint over paint, even if its digital ;) You got about 5thousand speed paintings to look at and look for reference. Taking your style into consideration, try something like this, minus the bg, just the guy. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b120/Vahnin/DWBars.jpg

Go out of your safe zone, little, by little and experiment around, you might be surprised after you open new canvas a week later and attempt portrait again!

Oh and don't go with flat face from front perspective in your next one, just give it a shot

i do alot of pencil studies ;p

working on filling my sketchbook.... along with life drawing class im currently in..

I've always loved most of those styles, where a single brush stroke can show so much detail and leave so much to the viewer! but im just terrible at it...

it looks as though its very very thought out ofc.... and ususally i just progress though my pieces after hours etc... and it changes quite a bit form whree i started :(

I would love to have a speed painting style like that... but as you see on jsp there isnt much for resources/people for digipainting....

hard to learn and progress :(

Than all you need is time! ;)
Usually they are not, try freehand drawing. Empty your head and let the pen flow on its own on blank canvas. Don't think what you want to draw, just do it. Reason why speedies look textured and messy and at same time well thought its cause they are rushed, yet the lines give it that amazing feeling as they were thought to look like that from beginning. I am bad at explaining this xD
