I can understand that people didn't want to go meet these guys and try to beat them, but how couldn't they just call the police.

You could of course go to jail, but that's not the main concern. People might have just feared to get beat down by the group. If your house is not near there, how the heck could you get there ?
I admit I wouldn't have the guys if I were alone and it was a group of 5. But I would have screamed to get the fuck out of this girl and that the police is comming.
Or I would have bought something to self defend and would have come nearer to them and would have scream to them to GTFO.

Yeah obviously i would have gone to jail had i cracked someone in the face with a baseball bat, but then i could have flipped it and said it was only in self defense because they tried to attack me whenever i saw what they were doing.
