Not really, just playing as a thief takes a little more patience. It doesn't help that their are very easy exploits in the game.

i far prefer morrowind, but i'm glad oblivion took out most of the exploits associated with the soul gems and soul trapping from morrowind

Mages have it incredibly easy in Morrowind, levitate + long range spells... along with spells to fortify all your stats, or potions to increase everything :\

I was thinking more along the lines of invisibility potions or invisity star sign and then stealing everything in a shop and then selling it back to the owner, and then buying training to level up.

euh i never bothered with the invis potions to steal, just had to get stealth high enough

Even better way is to just enchant all your gear with the chameleon effect.
