Yeah I started the project a bit before all the advice.

Don't worry I'm checking out these tuts and links, just using the render as a placeholder right now. Concentrating on my backgrounds and focal/lighting points.

Next few pieces will not be for jobs, but since I already promised this guy a sig about 4 days ago I'd like to follow through while using all the advice I've gotten.

Only reason I've used this render is because it's the specific one he requested.

Still can't get the composition. It is not about putting random things in front and back of render. Whatever you choose to use in your signature, everything should complement the subject you chose as focal.

I don't want to tell you what you should do but this stock have good lighting to it. What i could think of first, i think i would try something under-water-surface-like because of that. It is not logical but you could choose theme for your piece by what your stock provides you already. Less messing with blending later and shit later.

the BG and effects say rapper/pop culture, the render says medieval. One does not simply put any render on any background.

I mostly agree, I like the c4d but the orange vector and background are indeed as you say clashing with the style of the render. Currently trying some more stuff
