once blurred, you can tell there's no difference in value between your focal and the surrounding effect, this is bad for composition.

frame your focal in contrasting values and effects to draw the eye.

Oh cool, never really heard of this method before, thanks I can see this being helpful if I'm ever feeling not lazy and decide to use it, thanks

First ever smudge attempt, I have no idea what I'm doing :(

The blue part on the left side of the sig right above the light blue looks really weird and oversaturated D:

Because I can't edit -_-

I tried fixing the right and I also made it a bit brighter and less contrasty.

Still too much contrast and all in all too dark, can't tell what's what on my screen. Try to Ctrl+U your smudged colors to make them a bit less intense and maybe add more to the BG to lighten it up a tad. (remember, if possible, always avoid using PURE black - even the closest thing next to pure black will work TONS better with lightning effects) And then add a bit of soft brushing (if you haven't already).

Smudges are very decent for first time, but be warned now, it's a long and perilous journey to smudge mastery, if you really want to grow don't give up on it!

Thx, I'm probably going to try again later today with Sane's new tut, and I have a few other smudge tuts saved that I want to try, back to work

My bg sucked on the first one so I just added a wave texture on overlay or soft light and erased everything but the main bg, I think it looks better this way but idk

Or bring out the lines a bit more

v1 was better
some parts of the smudging are too fat like right side of render above hand, the end of the smudge looks wrong
but its not bad
dont really like the colours used though

dont read smudge tuts
look at psds and how ppl make certain effects
just spend time to hide/unhide layers, try different layer properties, etc
