This is called: experience. If you draw something "from mind", and i'm sure you know what it means, it makes it harder since you have to remember everything without being too far from reality. It's probably one of the hardest exercice you can do.
Just to make it clear, i often draw without using references, but it's just a matter of taste, beside that i'm doing a lot of studies from life or from pictures, i'm not doing stuff from mind just to get more respect or comments, who cares seriously?
Some people just can't work without reference, and Alex Ross is one good example, he's a beast when it comes to draw.

especially textures, this is one thing that is out of my reach for now. they looks so simple but so lifelike without much effort. or maybe im wrong, practicing takes alot effort?

nam nam nam, i will do something today maybe. i checked drawing tutorials and tips from slunkos tutorial thread and saw some amazing shit. will print everything out and get to practicing. especially i loved animal drawing tutorials. everything is explained perfectly and nicely illustrated so even handycap could understand (yeap, that's me). nawmnawm.

i really dig that shading.
could you tell me what you do here? when do you use what direction?
also, its really clean. when i use the shadings i only use it in 1 direction, else it looks like crap.(or 2 directions in about 45 degrees angle)

do you have a theoretical webpage on this?

Sorry I never saw this comment! Thanks.

What I'm doing here, basically emulating other pencil artists I'v seen. Using only one direction really flattens a piece and gives it no form. I'll try upload higher-res images of my sketches so you can take a better look, it's kind of difficult to explain. The direction also comes with experience...

edit; blizzard; nice sketch

WhyteLinux; cool stuff, you should push them further digitally

slunko; leaps ahead of your other stuff, like uncle said, great textures

linde; nice studies keep it up man

nice one slunko :) the highlights and texturing reminds me of blizzards work tbh!

linder i think you're pressing down too hard, try loosening your grip a little. use more references as well, it's good practice mate.

blizz, good posture man, looks great.

i agree with churley, you should vector some of your cartoons dan!

yeah, i thought i use too much pressure. anyway, would it be better to sketch with softer or harder pencils? i feel like harder is better because i can get solid lines with less pressure but i have to sharpen it all the time.

harder pencils scratch paper more and need more pressure but doesn't really need sharpening.
