Nice, you should definitely keep working on it. Is the ship crashing against the cliffs?

PS. Feels like the wind is coming from the side rather than from behind, the sails should follow the same direction (they look a super stiff now).

I like the fish eye look, waves clashing against the boat?

Have a look at Anders Zorn's work:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anders_Zorn
("Sommarnöje" in particular, third on the right.)

He starts with the mid tones and works his way down to darker parts and detail.

How I would go about:
Sketch (block in light and shadow areas).
Mid tones, keep the sketch on a layer above.
Subtle details like calm waves. I would use a textured brush for this.
Extreme shadows and light.

sounds good, i'lll try it out
but how can i shape the waves? I've actually never studied water before, it's one of my weak areas
