Yes, he sticks to the basics. I personally love his control but there are some fighters who will use a jump spinning kick (Something that I am good at but would never attempt) you can build up great momentum but you lose your FHR (Fast hit recovery), I am not concerned with someone taking my back during the standup portion of the fight because there is not much he can do besides take it to the ground where I am comfortable with anyhow since I can play the guard or pass his guard/mount. Standing chokes and submissions are very hard to pull off . but I agree that it is a safe bet keeping one foot planted for balance if nothing else.
