Well theres no step to step method with woodwork, if you prefer the router go for it. You did much better than I would.
I just prefer chisels because its harder to screw up :P... routers aren't so forgiving

again not trying to be a know it all.
You should make doubles off all of the inlays, with one set larger
that way you can use one pattern to score and mark, then shape the inlay to fit in the table, rather than the table to fit the inlay.

I also thought that in the future, a laser cutter would be a neet way to cut out the shapes. obviously this would not work on the table, but still. would make clean cutouts.

pretty much anything with a smooth surface.
no varnish or stain etc.
just keep in mind the wood will absorb the paint over time.

White oak, if I had to pick.

after i paint do i then varnish it?

Satin polyurethane. Unless you want a clear coat on it.
which doesn't make sense, you don't put a shine on canvas :P

@ flora: What all do you plan to do with the legs?
