Also, onix is immune to electric attacks. However, pretty much every pokemon can learn hidden power, and given the correct IV's you have a base 70 power 4* super effective attack making it simple.
Plus, Pikachu learns iron tail these days which also is super effective.
Ed: Also, based on the mechanics, using only your starter is the optimal strategy in red and blue. The faster you are compared to the opponent the higher the crit% chance. So, by levlling say a Charizard super high he will always get critical hits, maknig the game easy.
You need to critical chance that attitude.
