Makes sense. Low light conditions means you need a high ISO (or ASA film). 1600 ISO has shitloads of noise, especially on the D50 that shot was taken with.
It's nowhere near as noisy as 3200 rated film (or film pushed to a higher ASA).
That and most gigs don't allow flash photography, and you're not really going to find a decent flash that can light a scene like that unless you're just a couple metres away.
