Why in the world do so many people think mortified means scared?

the same reason why newspaper(omg ppl still read them?) articles are written at the reading level of a 7th grader.

americans, on average,have the reading level of a 7th grader.

I think it's because many people associate intense social humiliation with "horror" and then interchange horrified with scared without realizing they're diluting the meaning of the original phrase.'

Edit..I worded that terribly.

Horror and intense social humiliation are frequently interchangeable since horror is almost always a symptom of mortification

Ex. It mortified me to have to admit that I was a virgin

It horrified me to admit that I was a virgin.

Not in the context that theyre using it, lol. I think theyre mistaking it for the word terrified.

I understand that mortified =/ scared. I'm just offering an explanation as to why people might confuse them.

mortified sounds similar to horrified
