Playing with smudge. Any tips?

I am by no means a pro at smudge. But what I am for when I do is what I see the big dawgs doing, and that is more definition in the shapes that you’ve made here. Don’t get me wrong it actually looks good, but it also looks unfinished. Layer something on top of the smudge areas perhaps?

It kinda looks more like watercolor bleed than smudge to me, which is cool if that’s what you’re going for, tbh.
