That's what I've been trying to do. For instance I'm horrible at anime, so have been trying to do those lately. I'm not looking to imitate, I definitely want to come into my own. I just really like that grungeish style.

I've been doing this basically since Magi did his classes. So I'm still pretty new, and definitely soaking in all I can from the regulars. I read planetrenders and tagfreak forums constantly, along with doing a few tutorials a day.

Well imitation isn't bad during the learning process. Actually, taking a finished product and trying to replicate the results from scratch is a great way to see what tech you are comfortable with.

Right now it seems I'm committing to smudge pretty well. I've tried to do a few tags like the one above, they just never come close to being that good. I'll just have to do 2-3 a day until I can.

It was a request I did, so didn't have much choice on the font. If it where up to me I wouldn't even add font.

I like your current even if it's fairly standard. The composition is there and I can tell you have a natural eye for this stuff by the stocks you choose to work with and the tags that you find impressive.

Tried to work on colors more.

Add some lighting to the brighter areas.

gradientmaps are too heavy

Learn the colour wheel, Gradient maps won't teach you a thing.

Yeah I'm seeing that now. I didn't like the colors I originally used so tried to "fix it" ;/

Know any good sites with information on colors? I know how complementary and triadic work, but would like to study it more.

If your not going to listen to the advice, were not going to help you.
If you can't use gradients right, then don't use them at all. You need to learn how to make the colors work on your own. Not by running a filter.
