Tree branches are never thinner at trunk and thicker in the upper part, tree wouldn't be able to support its own weight and it would break off (major issue is not the possibility, but it looks weird). Reflections on lower part of the trunk also seem too strong, since it's reflective/global light -judging from the angle of the sun rays, in any case it wouldn't be that bright. Since the major focal of this piece would be the boy and the apple, you could somehow try and force the eye of observer to pay attention to the apple, and a bit less to the branches and leaves. I kinda like the transition from left to right, although the picture is unbalanced (lots of stuff going on on right, many diff colors and objects, while left is rather bland and boring). You got much more awesomeness in you, bring it out!
ummm, there are plenty of trees like the one in his painting; with no leaves in the trunk area and bushy on top.
