Quick question: When you're shading faces/etc, do you start with the darkest tone and work your way to the lightest or other way around?

i start with the highlights, even though its a bitch having to move all the layers underneath each other. although most artists i know start from the darkest. its all about personal prefrence

I dunno. I've been trying for the past two days to do a face and it's just not working. I'm trying to a do a lot of transitions to make it look really good.

I deleted all the face layers cause it looked bad. I just have those eyes and I'm working on the lips now. I work a lot, so I only spend like 30 minutes a day on it.

doing lots of layers for highlights of the face doesnt necessarily make it look better, but dont under-do it either. its better to do more for the transition from dark to light because thats where the skin basically changes colors and you want to show that. once you get to the darkest tones you can make big blobs of color instead of small ones because it plays a little trick on the eyes as just a big shadow if that makes sense.

like here from the top of her ear to her shoulder its one solid color and it works, so you dont need to break the bigger shadows up into smaller parts.
(this is also one of the best vexels ive ever seen in my life ;p)

Yeah, I know what you mean, I'm just trying to figure out the best way to make the transitions. I tend to make circular shapes you know, so I'd have to go from dark to light but I can't get it to look right.

hmm are you doing a more 'cartoon-y' style vexel? like when people fuck with opacity and stuff? or are you doing a realistic one
