One he used reference, and the other he just winged it.




Looks great man, thats quality practice right there. That atmospheric perspective is definitely reading.

For improvements, you could be more decisive with your edges. Think about whether an edge is hard, firm, soft, or lost and try to utilize every kind of edge. In your painting I see almost every shape has the same smudgy squiggly firm edge and it would be nice to see some hard edges on those cast shadows and some soft gradients to round out those mounds of snow. Also simplify your shapes, always simplify.

Also check out this tutorial if you have a chance, it helped me a ton and the guy is hilarious and a god tier artist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NygkJEc3yu4

aww yes i did see that but i cant seem to figure out how to go from black and white to color i tried but it never blended vary well i wonder if my cs3 just isent as good as every ones seems to have cs6 or if its just my skill level prob both i would think

The first one is obviously mountains. It is during a snowstorm, and the ridge is on the top. It seems quite clear to me imo. Doesn't look good for a image though. I also don't know much about this just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. I'd think you guys would at least be able to tell his theme.
