it's like the same as a tattoo artist - if you scratch for 3 years and then start an apprenticeship with a veteran artist, he's going to tell you to do things a certain way, but you won't be able to since you formed so many bad habits. for now, it's best that you start with a pencil and paper and then work from there. i've learned more about lighting and texture lately than i ever did with my tablet, and it's going to be that much easier once i get it back. also, do still life.
still life, as in, an object that you can clearly relate to a shape.
draw a rectangle in perspective, and then draw your cellphone INSIDE the box, for example.

Yeah, I do draw a lot with pencil and paper. This just seemed like a fun idea. My lighting is definitely horrible though, my proportion is usually off too. Going to do my coffee mug next.
