It's great that you bought the stuff, it'l help alot. You already know theres alot of problems with the portrait above. Proportions and anatomy is all over the place. Go grab some references, and if you have the cash go grab an anatomy book. Go get a darker pencil, 4B-6B, and use it with your lighter ones. Take note of shading styles you like and emulate them. Most important thing is to pratice as much as possible, though.

Any questions post them here or pm me

Better, but still off on the eyes(that damn left eye keeps giving me probs) and mouth.. Plus the overall slant of the face was wrong from the start. <_<

Best not to continue with a diseased drawing if the slant was off from the start, if a fundamental form like the tilt of the cranium is off, all of the subforms will thus be off and the hierarchy is broken. Try the same drawing again on a fresh sheet of paper, but this time focus first on the head and the slant of the center of the face first before moving on to smaller features

Alot of people think you can just go for it and if your talented, things come together. Thats a retarded way of thinking about it. Drawing is for the thinking man, so the more you are recognizing how forms are relating to eachother, the better you can place them. The eye does not work because you are just arbitrarily placing it around a face (which does not match your reference) and hoping to get lucky

I was using this as a guide, so I start with the eyes, nose, mouth after the initial oval and hidden lines are drawn. But its been hard to tell the actual slant of it until the face is about done.

Its only my second portrait other than quick sketches bro.. Look at the one I did 2 days ago(Picasso style) and it shows alot of progress.

Not really. Try drawing something less demanding proportions.

the previous drawing looks like she saw that video tape from the Ring

Pretty much nailed second drawing

when its your second portrait, your not good enough to use a portrait as a "guide" and make artistic decisions like changing the slant of the face. Also trying to do something in "picasso style" is a massive waste of time. You cannot make artistic alterations to something imitating life until you UNDERSTAND what you are drawing. When your learning, draw everything pricisely, you can stylize things once your good.

You should know the initial slant not when something is almost done, but before you have started, that way you can see on the paper where to place your features.

If you insist on drawing portraits, draw one that is straight forward, with no tilt up, down, or to the side. That will help you understand proportion without having to worry about things you dont understand
