I don't know what to do next... I keep starting stuff and not finishing it because of being unhappy about it.

All i can say is. do something. finish it even if you're unhappy. you may be happy about the end result.

thats because your getting "stuck" which means your reaching a point where you cant keep refining you image


its because your observational skills arent completely developed, the way you fix this is to just keep on pushing it, the further you can push one image, the more problems you will be able to solve on the next image. Worry more about value relationships and shadow shapes than making the transitions smooth


if you dont feel like pushing that portrait (i dont blame you, portraits can get frustrating) then try setting up a simple still life on your desk, or try doing a colored peice of fruit

Well it's not so much that I'm unhappy with what I've been painting and my progress, it's more that I can't come up with any ideas for what to do.

get on conceptart.org, you'll have too many ideas in 10 minutes from the sketchbook threads ( the 4/5 star ones)

I agree with you. I'm going to do another still life next, portraits seem like a struggle still, and it's about time I do something in color.
