My roommate let me play DayZ for a bit and it was kinda just pointless wandering around for a really long time
and I don't really like military or gun based games :/ I think I might just get Dark Souls 1 and 2 and no life on those for a bit

You have been given a chance to play a game in any imginable way and you are pointlessly wandering around? Man, you seriously lack imagination.

Create your own mission, own story and own ending to it. I played the mod about year long, the SA so far only couple of hours and I have had a gaming experience that no other gave has been incapable of. I mean, yes the beginning is hard and getting known to it takes some time but when you do, you can do whatever the hell you want. Hunt bambies, hunt bandits, meet people, make friends, stay alive. Just one mission and endlss ways of succeeding it. Or one way to fail.

Look up some videos about dayz and how players create stories around it. You might like if you like games that tell a story (like The Last of Us but you can make yourself a story)

I just prefer the medieval setting over any other genre

That is what you think you do but eventually you are juat led to your story by game. It is one story with limited options for player even though it might not seem so while playing.

well, i am just a fanboy talking now but really, i have played many games, inc rpgs, and no other makes you feel so free in matter of making your path to end.

E# no checkpoints, no path that you have to follow, no quests without what you cannot succeed, no directions, no help in any form. You are like in person throw in wasteland what is very well rendered with great atmosphere and detailed landscape that all plays part in it, and you have to stay alive. You have to find food, drink, protection like in reality. you give up, you fail. you get too brave, you fail. I have crawled for hours in this game because i broke my legs with my stupidity and go nothing to fix them while being never safe from all the dangers. i havd run hundreds of kilometers just to keep myself going. you get in this game, youfeel it like it would be your physical self weakening in hunger, ambushed by roadbandits, being hunted by zombies that seem to come out of nowhere. You feel the pain if you are being shot at, you feel the thrill when you are in firefights, you feel forgiveness, sadness, happiness, depression frustration. It is deep through emotions, you will face real choices and challenges. Sometimes your choices will result in your own death or your friends death, sometimes you get friends. and not just players that wander the land in boredom but humanbeings who feel the same emotions, make their choices and follow the similar path. you get to know them, you trust them, they trust you. They save your lige occasionally as the same you will save theirs and they and you, yourself, feel a real thankfulness like your are being saved. But you can go as bandit and feel no forgiveness, no mercy, no sadness and no frustration. only rage that will cut through the life of anyone you meet or being hunted by others like you because your kind never lets anyone go.

It is kind of game that, i might say, help you in life. you learn emotions that you have not before. you may let out emotions that you wouldnt or couldnt in physical world. You learn to be a human, make mistakes, learn from them without actually being affected by consequences.
