I'm using a 45 px brush in the beginning but when I smudge it looks like a 10-20 px brush, I don't get it D:

You can also do some of your smudge on another canvas with a really big size so you can do details easier, then just move it over to the one you're working on.

I did it on the same canvas in attempt to match the flow o.o
