poor render choice imo
you could slap on a clipping mask with some black soft round brushing on the part that is lit up

your effects are cool but your adjustment layers are lacking which is why they come across as a little flat.


basically, your stuff looks too dark, too sharp or too contrasted.

Any advice or tutorials on how to make them better?

Sorry, I don't really have any tutorial to link, but just mess around with them a lot, you'll eventually get the hang of it.

Don't be afraid to lower opacity of your layers if you think you may have over done (ie brightness/contrast, curves etc.).

Just try to keep things simple and once you're really comfortable with what you're doing, then you can move on to riskier things (ie: pulling off a super bright or sharp tag etc.)
