If you're going for "clean" style, you really need depth, and flow.

This is something I made ages ago.

Colour:

All that is, is some pentooling, a gradient (100% opacity - 0%) for the detached eyes part, and a fair amount of blending filters.
Nothing hard, just a lot of playing with things until they look right (as is 99% of making a tag).

I'm sure there's much better examples, this is just one I had on hand.

render choice is a huge part in sig making... the render needs to be high quality. This looks very low quality and it sort of gets lost

some parts are too blurred, some are to over sharpened.

Render doesnt blend well, looks copy and pasted

forget this one and move onto a new one.

Brushes don't play a big part in sig making unless you're smudging. Even then it's pretty basic.

Agree 100% Render are definatly a make or break thing. Always find the highest resolution you can find.

I suggest you do some pen tool tutorials aswell that way you can learn to make your own renders if worst comes to worst. You'll also find pen tool is really powerful and will be your best friend when it comes to vector work. (If you eventually move to illustrator)
