most people just pentool what they can then grab select colors out of the effects and soft brush it out

theres no easy way to render anything especially special effect

grab colors with marquee through select colors and block them out little by little

in the render with the muzzle flash, all he did was pentool out the colors and then he used the smudge tool and a feather/blur to make it look not-so-horrible.

also, as bundy3 mentioned, it's possible in notepad.
