He does know to stretch the skin right? Some of those lines look they were done on loose skin.

yes, but that design was actually only two colors both set to multiply, that's where the third color came from

I imagine its kinda hard when your tattooing yourself :P Use duct-tape or something to hold the skin firm
I use 5rl for pretty much everything. Anything else I use a square needle.
How deep is your needle set?
