most employers don't know anything about designing, so telling them your going to do something differently doesn't matter to them. I know at the 2 companies I consult for they think it's magic that I can but 2 different kinds of gradients on the same thing.

You just have to get used to your opinion not mattering as much and having to fight for changes that improve the projects you work on, despite most employers being as easily distracted by shiny lens flares as the kids in the request section.

Unless of course your working for a design firm, that's a completely different ball game.

I've always been a freelance fine artist and designer, this is my first 9-5 job as a graphic designer.
lol tweak how did you get a 9-5 as a designer?
hope that portfolio isn't a bunch of ripped work like some of your previous stuff here

Honestly, I would just do it the way I wanted on the side.

When I work for someone, be it 9-5 or free lance. its not just the product. It's my name attached to it, and for that even If i have to work longer or extra for no pay. or bring my work home, or purchase materials on my own dime. I do it.

And if the work is good, no one cares how you did it.

If they don't understand the why, tell them the effect it has upon them

I.E
  • Can produce work twice as fast with the software over photoshop.
  • Less chance of printing errors
  • More flexibility in regards to how they use the exported document (a photoshop pdf page might be 2mb but the same thing with indesign would be 50k, and in a 50 page document that has severe implications when emailing to their clients)

most of the time they will come around.

As we supply the software for some of our marketing team, licences are very costly so they will try and make you have the minimum resources!

could be worse if they get someone external to do it I guarantee it will cost hella lot more.
