I wish there was a good quality smudge video tutorial on youtube.
There's not really a "wrong" way to smudge.
The end result is what matters: Certain methods may have relatively shorter paths to the desired end product, but if you prefer a particular method, I wouldn't be discouraged by the technical aspect of it.
