So, my last thread got closed do to some pointless arguing.. Therefore this is STRICTLY a progression thread which means no arguing whatsoever. If someone posts a bit of advice that you don't like, then please hold your piece.

Going to start this thread back off with the sphere and pear.

you lose the left side of the pear in shadow alot due to your background value. notice in the reference there is a much lighter value to the left which defines the shape of the pear in shadow?

Yeh, I noticed that just haven't reworked it yet.

I have some things set up that I really like and am going to attempt today sometime. Somewhat busy schedule but I should have at least a WIP posted by tonight.

It's not perfect, but I do consider myself an amateur at digipainting for now. Also, it's only a WIP.
I know the chess board and piece are bigger than the reference.. I'm probably going to downsize them when done as far as I can to keep the same proportional size of each.

cool start, the perspective is off on almost everything however.
nice shading and tones, but I think the perspective is slanted.

Thanks for pointing that out. I probably won't address any of the perspective issues until i'm done with the piece though. But the next time I post it up it should hopefully be the completed version.

it'll be too late to fix it then. May aswell ignore it and watch out for it on your next piece.

Your process at the moment isn't great, however. Try blocking in your values before going into detail

This

Having a strict working process is really important when your learning, try to think out what your accomplishing every step and make each step build upon the last. That way you wont ever notice a massive problem that is too late to fix when your almost finished

For example, I would probably block out the poster shape of the shadow first before i dove into details. That would be seperating the surface of the chess peice into two values, identifying your shadow shapes as seperate from your highlight/midtone. Usually you want to work from general to specific.

You clearly have a good observational eye so its tempting to get caught up in that detail your seeing, but its better in the end to be disciplined
