Please, catch me in a lie. It's not an easy thing to do because I'm not much of a liar.

The balance stuff was fairly boring. Most of the items were very similar in concept to what people use now, just better. They needed to be good enough that you'd be at a huge disadvantage for not using them. Necessitating their use was important because that essentially removed some bad modifiers (+% res, absorb) from the viable item pool.
