When you factor in Ethereal: 601 x 1.5 = 901.5
When you factor in +200% Enhanced Defense: 901.5 + (901.5 x 2) = 2704.5
Or overall: 601 x 1.5 x 3 = 2704.5
His overall main point is that the highest possible defense on that armor is 2703.
The armor pictured is 199% ed, but somehow has a higher max armor value than a perfect roll.
I will not claim to be an expert, but I tried my hand at the calcs and understand what Teckie is saying.
I will wait to see what others say and possibly expand my understanding.

Perf def on sacred armor is 600
Perf def on eth sacred armor is 900.
If a edef is rolled on an item it will get perf def +1.
So we have a maximum def of 901 + 200% =2703 def.
