I started with a M/P... its cookie cutter but gets the job done. Mages aren't that reliant on gear because their skills aren't % DPS based like other classes (rogue for example) so they're quite easy to start with. The only time i ever had a problem with me 55/40 m/p was the fact that in PvP, I couldn't get off flame, because of the 3second cast time. But apart from that, mage's are quite good :) if you ever come to American servers, PM me :) i can try to help to get s tarted

depends how you would like to play, how much time and/or money youre willing to spend on the game, and if you want common flavor of the month combos.

just starting and dont care about endgame? try mage/priest, mages are good for a long while, especially during low/mid levels. with the priest side you can heal yourself. knight/warrior is tanky with decent damage. anything/priest or anything/druid is decent early on because of the heals.

if you care about end endgame, the highest instance out now is ran by scouts. mages dont really have a place there. sure they can do it, but an almost perfect mage will be outdamaged by an average scout. scouts currently have the highest damage in boss fights. are they going to nerf them? who knows. scout/warden /rogue or /warrior are probably the highest damage scout combos.

rogue/knight is pretty good. good damage, option to tank endgame, but they dont have the aoe to hold large groups like a knight primary, less defense, more dodge. warrior/knight has more defense and life than an r/k usually, but both are good. scout/knight can tank if theyre built good and if there isnt much need for a real tank because everyones overgeared for that area.

//tl;dr?
scout and rogue/knight are good, and im not sure how far you went with them. there are different roles in a party and you can easily find 1 or 2 of the best combinations for that role if you look on the rom forums.

I believe I'll get what I want out of the item shop with phirius stones and ingame-gold for dias, maybe even some fg for dias. no need to go "real money" to get good in this game, plus the drops in the elite instances are good enough.

anything priest is indeed a good solo, but i'm going to be a raider / party dpser most likely. I chose r/w because one of the most extensive rogue guides i've seen online show that r/w has the highest dps melee wise, while r/s has dps ranged+melee wise. i'm gonna do both, and so far have a r/w 20/10 up.

i went 20/15 with r/k and honestly didn't like it, but that's obviously a noob's point of view since so many ppl say it's good, perhaps in end-game levels it really is that good.

well right now, many people are complaining about S/X being OP... so pretty much scout anything is pretty good... but I personally REALLY enjoyed my mage/priest... I didn't have any troubles in PvE and I don't believe mages are useless untill Warnorken arena, one of the newer instances... So in all honesty, for a first playthrough, mage/priest or mage/druid are both really good combos...

Play a priest/scout gives you the best of both worlds in the sense every instance run needs either healer/dps + some of the priest/scout elite skills really are nice.
