Yep agree with everything and worth mentioning, the season Lemieux won (87-88) he also scored 70 goals which was 14 goals more than 2nd place. Pretty much a no brainer to give the Hart to a guy who wins the Art Ross and Rocket Richard (though it didnt exist yet).

The McDavid for Hart trophy has been getting a lot of traction up here but I don't think it should be won by a non-playoff team player unless he absolute dominates the league. While McDavid is definitely the best offensive player, I wouldnt say he's been head and shoulders more dominate than other guys.

Agree , the thing that isn’t mentioned about this case is Pittsburgh was a good team that year as well. They missed playoffs by 1 point and finished with 81 points 1 game over .500. They had a better record than 6 teams who did make the playoffs( they finished tied for 11/12th out of 21 teams with6 teams having worse records making the playoffs. Also they guy he finished 27 points ahead of was 99 (kings made playoffs with 68 points 13 less than pens), who missed 16 games. Lemieux also missed 10, he finished 37 points ahead of next closest(61 if you pace his scoring for full 80 games)

This is a fair comment imo.

We can't deny the fact Mcdavid is the best offensive player in the game right now.

However when you look at Hall having 93 points, being the clear leader, and seeing the next guy only has 53 points it is obvious he put the team on his shoulders and carried them to a playoff spot they had no chance of getting without him.

to me that is what the most valuable characteristic is of the award. Another example would be Nathan Mackinnon. No way is Colorado 1 win away from the playoffs without him. However Colorado has a more even spread of scoring, which is why I would give it to Hall.

You have to feel for Mcdavid who could do nothing more to help the team, yet they still don't make the playoffs. When was the last time a 100+ point scorer did not go to the playoffs? That is absolutely ridiculous. The rest of the Oilers sans Draisatl and maybe a couple others should be absolutely ashamed of themselves to let an effort like that be wasted.

The NHL should just clear up the language on this award or introduce a new one for best player because it’s ridiculous that it comes with playoff only implications. How can they not have an award for the best player in a given season?

Also I don’t interpret most valuable to his team as most valuable relative to his teammates, I interpret it as total value provided.

Nowhere in the description of the hart does it say it’s for a playoff team only.
Simple states it’s to be awarded to the player deemed most valuable to his TEAM.

Mcdavid has had a revolving door on each wing and has played phenomenal with whoever is there. Now it’s nuge and rattie and he’s blowing the league up this last half of the year.
Leads league in 5v5 pts by 20pts compare to Kopitar in second. If the oilers had a decent PP this year mcdavid would have an additional 20pts on the year.

How is mcdavid not the most valuable player to his team?!

Again, the hart has nothing to do with being in playoffs. You’d know this is you’d look it up

can't be that important of a player to your team if you can't help the succeed

Not much one player can do when you’re goalie has an off year and your defence started the season injured to key players and forced everyone out of position and your GM decides not to address the issue in the off season.
