For it to be socialism it has to actually be socialism, and the definition is quite clear.
If every attempted Democracy ended with the bulk of people executed and in poverty, we'd agree it's a shit system. Ideology is worth fuck all if every single attempt at it ends in ruin. This is socialism.
Your current idealized "socialist" European nations aren't socialist, they're high tax nations with universal welfare programs. Some have higher levels of economic freedom than the United States. "Real" socialism is impossible, the theory of the "new socialist man" is evidence of this.
