Venezuela is a legacy of a state capitalist system known as Chavism, whose sole market valuation is based on heavy crude; a commodity which doesn't even break even for them until bbl reaches $78. Venezuela sits on top of the worlds largest oil reserves at around 300 billion barrels. Over the next 40 years, as we reach the end of all current EIA reserve estimates, bbl will climb back over $100 and Venezuela will become a massive producer. In fact, they will likely become the largest producer in the world about 25-30 years from now. The reason the CIA is funding fascist rebel groups and "protestors" is to topple the Chavist government and install a friendlier right-wing regime. That way all of our largest oil corporations will have unfettered access to the largest oil fields in the entire world. Right now, that is a right reserved to the national oil company. There is no doubt about it: Venezuela is on track to become a state capitalist transitioning to socialist economy raking in the largest oil profits on the planet in a couple of decades because their planned austerity now is going to have a massive payoff for them. That is, unless the United States and its oligarchs topple the Chavist government and allow our corporate vampires to drain the nation and its people of their own birthright.
All of you Fox News watching Republicans and fake libertarians on here are such morons for believing CIA propaganda. Haven't you learned better from our history? Especially in South America... Do you really want to be responsible for another Pinochet?
edit: and just so you know, it's the same thing driving Iran. Proven reserves of 150 billion barrels. Third largest on the planet. Yet, because of sanctions, they are barely exporting any oil so production has practically ceased. Do you really think the Iran situation is about nuclear research? How daft.
Even Donald knows why Iraq was important:
“We go in, we spend $3tn, we lose thousands and thousands of lives, and then … what happens is we get nothing. You know, it used to be to the victor belong the spoils.”
“You’re not stealing anything,” Trump said. “We’re reimbursing ourselves … at a minimum, and I say more. We’re taking back $1.5tn to reimburse ourselves.”
