When i first moved to the US one of my most revolting impressions was how bad the bread is. It's a staple where i come from and it's delicious there. Here unless you want to spend like 4-5 bucks it's really bad. Even the $ 5 dollar bread here is no where near as good as Europe.
In the US the fillings in the sandwich are the main focus, and entire cultures in the US have been built on the bread being an afterthought. Head to the south and laugh when the hillbillys pull out a loaf of wonderbread for BBQs, or even in restaurants. fuckin weirds me out big time. i prefer to focus on the fillings and then butter/toast the bread. even wonderbread is gg with butter.

What disgusted me the most is that some of the breads I've had in the US had sugar in it. Bread, especially bread for sandwiches should not be sweet. Only pastry style breads like croissants can have a bit of sugar in it. Even then, proper croissants are not sweet to taste.
ya we subsidized corn sugar long ago, and when they ran out of normal uses they started to stuff it in just about everything. white bread has a shocking amount of sugar in it.
other than white bread we make most of our bread in my house, the wife has a gluten intolerance and i've got my recipe down to about 1-2$ a loaf, compared to 5$/loaf at the store for one half the size.
