It's the national holiday (aka Russia Day) and demonstrations aren't allowed. Navalny knew this and could have protested any other day, but he still organized this illegal protest just to make international headlines.

Honestly I think it's pretty disgusting to use the national holiday for this kind of stuff. While I do think people should have the right to protest against any government, this shouldn't be the day for it. National holidays should be kept aside from political matters that divide the country's people.

Russia is not a western nation in which democratic principles are held in high regard. Not sure why you think they adhere to western standards of freedom when it's never been the case.
