Thanks for turning up Andy.

It's a pretty rough environment round here if you're Muslim atm... lotta bigoted idiots up in here.

Just like to say that although I think your religion is utter bullshit, dangerous bullshit just like pretty much every other religion, I also stand against the utter ignorant arse being spewed by Widow and others in this thread.

Probably to sell papers and make money, and because there is a demand for such a product.  Capitalism has no ideology, it isn't Muslim, or French, or anything like that...it will make products and sell things to everybody, including anti-capitalists.  Charlie Hebdo or any firm wouldn't exist if it couldn't afford to.

Individual people may be doing it to exercise rights, or to insult.  It really isn't relevant though.  It really isn't.  Iconoclasm isn't illegal.

Mmmm, alright then. Somehow this kind of makes those freedom of speech rallies going on somewhat less meaninful.

I don't think they're freedom of speech rallies in France at the moment. I think these rallies are for something else, something dark, nationalistic, and xenophobic.

Can anybody shed some light on why Charlie Hebdo decided to print the pictures? Was it simply because they wanted to exercise those rights or was their intention to insult?

I'm sure the States closely guards freedom of speech and press, but I'm sure they wouldn't allow the printing of the N-word just so they could poke fun at a specific group of people.

They ware critical on all institutions, the had critique on every institution that was their job.

Nah, it's not that bad. They're free to have an opinion like you and I are.

Meh, the way I see it there's a difference between 'having an opinion' and asserting that all Muslims are jihadis at heart.

I guess. I gotta admit it does kinda sting when people place me and my family in the same category as bin Laden or ISIS, but if it makes them and their families feel safer to paint us all with the same brush then perhaps some good can come out of bad. Just remember that the extremists in the Middle East are doing the same thing to the Western World.

...weak...Breivik killed as a statement against multiculturalism and he never thought his victims were muslims .  :bonk:

Indeed...in his manifesto he even said he sympathized with Hindus, Jews, and didn't even have a personal relationship with God. For some reason, liberals are EXTREMELY uncomfortable admitting that terrorist attacks in the name of Islam greatly outnumber the terrorist attacks done in the name of other things.

Probably the same reason when you say "Religion caused XXX atrocity!" the pro religious will jump in and say "Oh, well, there was this and that and this other reason this ACTUALLY happened, and religion was just the scapegoat".
