Reagan being shot is one of my earliest political memories. Operation Desert Shield and then Storm is another biggie. I remember how funny my dad though the commercial with Michael Dukakis on a tank was. The Berlin Wall coming down was a biggie. First attack on the World Trade Center, the attack on the USS Cole.

I'll try to think of more global events. Fall of the Soviet Union was a biggie. Chinese retaking of Hong Kong.

Any of those affect your life directly in your opinion?

"I did not have sexual relations with that woman"

Also the Oklahoma City bomber and Dolly the first cloned sheep.

I was fairly young so I knew what was happening but wasn't very aware of the implications/consequences.

When I was very little (mid '60's) we lived on the edge of Keokuk Iowa, one night they were having a dance at the Amory which was about a 1/4 mile from our house, there was a big explosion and fire, I can't remember how many Servicemen and their wives or girls were killed and burned but it was bad. My dad and the guy that lived in the house next to ours ran back to help and they didn't come home until almost the next night.

The next Historical things I remember are peace rallies my parents were a bit older than most of the students protesting, but I remember standing on the hood of their car trying to sing and chant along with whoever was speaking. The people in the peace movement are usually portrayed as the long haired hippie, stylized types but my dad had a flattop and wore dickies type work pants with a white tee shirt everyday. He was a machinist and my mom was a housewife. And mot of the people who shared their views were of the similar type. I learned how to be passionate and realistic about an ideal during that time.

I also remember when Neil Armstrong stepped onto the Moon, that made me look up into the skies at night a lot differently.

My last one will be Watergate, and watching some of Nixon's trial on TV. and my parents making me watch his resignation speech. I hadn't paid much attention to anything political before then but I sure started after that.

Marine barracks bombing in Beirut. My dad was at sea deployed and about to return, but had his deployment extended 4 months. His ship took part in shelling afterwards.

Probably the first one I remember was the Iran hostage crisis in the late 70s. Other things happened during the 70s, but I don't have any real sort of memory of those events (Vietnam, Watergate, oil embargo, etc).

Haha, I remember reading an article while Clinton was still president, trying to scientifically explain how lying made his nose bigger.
