..the threat from terrorism is not overblown and folks are not desensitized to the possible threat from ebola .

How do you measure the threat from things like terrorism and ebola?

In body bags. Car accidents are a way bigger threat.

In all fairness you have to account for the threat's potential.

Terrorists could get Wmd.

A virus could spread.

Luckily our top military strategists and virologists don't make decisions based on the news.

If anything people are too sensitized to Ebola.
Its sensationalism writ large. Effecting a whopping 2 people in the US and everyone knows about it.

News has become like baskin robbins ice cream there are flavors for everyone, not that many years ago befor cable tv. and satellite tv. really all we had for news was the big 3 ABC, CBS, and NBC. and the anchors on the evening news brought you the news, honestly maybe with a bit of a left lean or right lean but mainly middle of the road, and we took the news to be honest and forthcoming.

when there was a disaster if it was reported as such on the networks we knew it was a disaster..it was real!

now with every flavor of the news possible it's hard to know just what is fair and honest reporting, a channels reputation doesn't seem to be as much at stake if there is bad reporting now.

Its not that news was necessarily truthful before, its that we had no good way of knowing when they were full of shit.
Now we can look online or have a number of other channels criticizing what the other guys are saying.

The media has a history of hyping threats to attract attention.  (See terrorism) I wonder if down the line or perhaps now with ebola,  if people will be unable to respond appropriately to a real threat.  I wonder if people have become desensitized by sensationalism.

Your thoughts?

Couldn't have said it better. The media has been all over the hype train on the environmental "issues". It scares me to think of what might happen if we had a REAL threat, not something that still hasn't killed us after several hundred years of exposure. When, not if, we face another crisis that requires a great generation, like those of the previous World Wars, I'm afraid our little tree huggers will be too busy nutting over their all-electric, zero-emission coffee mugs instead of answering the call to arms and taking a stand against a serious threat, like the Muslim nations in the Mid East that want to kill us.

Media literacy and personal finance should be two mandatory classes in school nowadays imo.

Lots of today's science and reading classes advocate for skepticism when given information but it isn't firmly enforced. Overall, high schools do a shit job at teaching life skills.

Not sure what you mean here. Are you denying that the media is creating a false panic over environmental issues that aren't going to have any impact in the next several hundred years?
