We should.  Marijuana is a plant that obviously merits more research with regards to its effects on humans; as it is illegal, America has not put a significant amount of time and money into discovering its full potential.  It's hard to get a grant to look at a controlled substance, so not a lot of universities have pursued it.  But then, you ask, why hasn't the U.S. government funded some sort of group through the FDA or another oversight agency to pursue some of the claims coming out of other countries' research (namely, Canada and some of the Nordic states)?  It's because of a little-known article out of a Swedish research team:  http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/08/120827852039.htm

The Swedish team found that marijuana increases norepinephrine production.  Norepinephrine is the neural transmitter primarily in charge of letting you focus diligently on a task.  Sounds innocuous on its own, but they also discovered that marijuana (when used responsibly) inhibits sodium monofluorophosphate acceptance.  In short, pot will decrease your intake of the chemicals the fed is pumping into our water supply and will also allow us to think more clearly.  I think that you can put the pieces together from there.  Do some research about this finding and educate yourself on the topic--you might be shocked at what you find if you look at research from other nations.
